Catalina Sounds Sound of White Sauvignon Blanc 2014

Catalina Sounds

New Zealand's Catalina water planes (known as flying boats) played a vital role across the South Pacific during and after World War II.

Catalina Sounds pays homage to this plane and the beauty of the Marlborough Sounds where it served and made its home.

Peter Jackson's aspiration at Catalina Sounds is to continue producing excellent quality wines of beautiful fruit expression, interest, finesse and balance. Striving to create wines of great honesty and integrity that are true to their site, while attempting to incorporate complexity and longevity into the wines.

Capturing Catalina’s most interesting parcels of fruit, this wine shows New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in a new light. Fermented and aged in oak, these sweet oak flavours blend with stone-fruit, grapefruit and lemon notes that build to a gently mineral-infused finish. Ideal with fresh seafood; it also has enough weight to complement creamy or buttery sauced dishes.

Tasting Notes

Winemaker's Comments

The second release of this wine carries forth our ambition of showcasing our favourite and most interesting parcels of Sauvignon Blanc from our home vineyard in its own wine. Once again, I believe we’ve struck a lovely balance between textural interest and fruit purity in this alternative expression of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

100% Sauvignon Blanc

Acid (g/L)

Sugar (g/L)

Hand-picked fruit was whole bunch pressed and the juice minimally settled prior to transfer to large oak vessels (ranging in size from 4000L to 5700L) for warm fermentation. 40% of the wine was un-inoculated while the balance was fermented with cultured yeast. The wine remained unsulphured on lees in oak until Christmas 2014, when it was blended and prepared for bottling in March 2015.

100% matured in large French oak foudres for 9 months.

Pale straw/lemon with green hues.

Blackcurrent leaf and herbs intertwine with stonefruit, citrus, gentle tropical notes and flinty undertones.

Moderately rich yet possessing a precise acid backbone, the palate is nuanced with blackcurrent leaf, herbs and stonefruits giving way to focused citris flavours with hints of guava, passionfruit and pineapple. Fermentation in oak lends a textural, mouth coating element, while never dominating the fruit flavours.

Food Matching

A great match with fresh seafood, the texture of the wine also allows it to accompany heartier poultry dishes.
